Overview
“ ‘툴Tul하다’는 ‘다소거친’, ‘다소모자란’, ‘덜정제된’, ‘덜마감된’등의 중의적표현으로 사람뿐만아니라 특정사물의 성질까지 표현할 수 있는 제주방언이다.
나는 ‘지속성’에 관심이 있다. 지속성이란 일관성이라는 단어와 맥을 함께한다. 이것은 시간을 견뎌내는 어떤 것이라고 현재의 나는 답할수 있다. 제주와 유럽에서 건축을 수학修學하고 실무를 경험했던 나는 유럽이 갖고 있는 지속성은 경제성을 넘어선 어떤 것, 즉 거시적 의미로서 하나의 사회가 만들어낸 ‘문화’ 자체에 있다는 점을 알게되었고, 그것은 어떤 건강한 오래됨 속에서 나오는 ‘사회의 모든 것總體’이라는 생각에 이르게 되었다.
한국이라는 나라의 남쪽끝섬 제주에서 나고자란 나는 ‘다소거친’, ‘덜정제된’ 모습에서 제주를 본다. 이는 어떤 원초적 현상이기도하며, 매우 시각적이며 청각적일수도, 촉각적일수도 있는 상태를 의미한다. 제주의 거친 파도는 매우 촉각적이며, 청각적일뿐만아니라 지나치게 시각적 감흥을 내던진다. 바람 부는 날의 제주는 ‘제주의 모든 것總體’을 보여준다.”

오피스툴 설립자인 손종남은 건강한 오래됨 속에서 배경으로서의 건축을 지향하고 고민하는 건축가이다. 제주대학교 건축공학과에서 학사를 받고, 스페인 까딸루냐 폴리테크닉대학의 바르셀로나건축학교를 졸업(Diploma)하였다. 바르셀로나의 S. Vives Arquitectura, 지로나의 CampsFelip Arquitecturia에서 인턴 및 실무를 익혔다. 스페인건축사(ETSAB)와 한국건축사(KIRA) 자격 소지자이며 2016년부터 제주에서 오피스툴(Office Tul)을 설립/운영하고 있다.
